Thanks a lot! Finally an explanation of the funny name of this bird.
Some of my friends and I have often wondered how it came to be, and our theory was not all wrong: We were convinced it must had been formed when one english speaking person should tell the name to someone else. The latter would answer: A what a what??!! :-)
And later that turned out to be Avadavat!

Dear Jens Gulseth Wessberg, Actually on the net it is speculated that the "A-what a what" or Avadavat corrupted pronunciation is due to the Potuguese and not the english , maybe going all the way back to 17th century!
mvh Paul

Hej Paul.
I bedste mening - Jens

Hej Jens, du har 100% ret englændere kunne sagtens have fundet på "A what a what bird"!

Mvh Paul

Mvh Jens
