Hereby December 2013 Danish Bird News,
The first twitchable Middle Spotted Woodpecker since 1959 (when the species became extinct as a breeder) was a male well watched at Gram, Sønderjylland during 13th-30th 44 km. north of the German border. A juvenile Ivory Gull (8th record) was well watched at Hanstholm Harbour, Nordjylland during 18th-31st. A summer plumaged adult Brünnich's Guillemot flew past a single observer at Skagen, Nordjylland on 7th (the last twitchable was seen in 1998). A young female Snowy Owl was well watched at Hanstholm, Nordjylland during 21st-31st (having possibly arrived via ship?). An adult White Pelican of unknown origin was near the Baltic Sea north of Aabenraa, Sønderjylland during 24th-30th (a sure rediscovery of the November bird south of Kiel, Germany 108 km. to the SSE).
Other December records include a Red-breasted Goose, two drake Red-crested Pochards, a drake King Eider, a returning drake Black Scoter, a Great Northern Diver, a 1st winter Shag, a juvenile Gyr Falcon, a record three 1st winter (very late) Sabine's Gulls during 1st-6th, three 1st winter Iceland Gulls, a 1st winter Baltic Gull, four Yellow-legged Gulls, two twitchable Hawk Owls, up to six Crested Larks remaining at the sole breeding site at Hirtshals, Nordjylland during 13th-31st, three Nutcrackers, 13 Two-barred Crossbills and 20 Coues's Arctic Redpolls.
