Danish Bird News January 2013

Hereby January 2013 Danish Bird News:

The 2nd ever White-winged Scoter ssp. deglandi for continental Europe (following one in Finland) - an adult male - was off Blåvands Huk, Vestjylland on 23rd-24th and 28th. On the last date it was even seen alongside the first Danish Black Scoter rediscovered for it's 10th winter there. Another returning drake Black Scoter was off Røsnæs, Vestjælland on 20th. The first ever hybrid Common Eider x King Eider for Denmark, a drake, was photographed off Rørvig, Vestsjælland on 30th. The drake Lesser Scaup returned to Skælskør Nor, Vestsjælland on 24th-31st. The adult male Black-throated Thrush remained at Vejlerne, Nordjylland during 1st-13th. A 1st winter Hawk Owl was near Haslev, Sydsjælland 60 km. SW of Copenhagen during 5th-27th.

Other January records include a 1st winter Yellow-billed Diver, three 1st winter Shags in Nordjylland Harbours, a rare wintering Little Egret, nine Great White Egrets, two adult Black Brants, a 1st winter drake Ring-necked Duck at Frederiksdal just 14 km. from central Copenhagen on 30th-31st, a 1st winter drake Red-crested Pochard, a returning escaped female Hooded Merganser, four 1st winter Gyr Falcons following a record autumn/winter, an adult Mediterranean Gull, just two Iceland Gulls, ten Yellow-legged Gulls, a singing male Tengmalm's Owl, up to nine Crested Larks remaining at Hirtshals, Nordjylland, five Nutcrackers and one Two-barred Crossbill.
