Hereby March 2013 Danish Bird News:
A female or 1st winter male Snowy Owl was reported at three Nordjylland sites 35 km. apart during 18th-28th (the first for almost two years). The 1st winter male Ring-necked Duck was still at Furesø 15 just km. from central Copenhagen on 11th. The regular drake Lesser Scaup was again at Skælskør Inderfjord, Vestsjælland during 23rd-31st. A rare drake King Eider was well twitched at Egense, Nordjylland during 25th-31st - it was initially discovered on a photograph - another drake flew past Gilbjerg Hoved, Nordsjælland on 31st. The returning drake Black Scoters were still at Blåvands Huk, Vestjylland on 1st-7th and at Asserbo Strand, Nordsjælland on 3rd-30th. The first Danish White-winged Scoter was still at Blåvands Huk on 1st-3rd alongside the local Black Scoter. The 3rd Hawk Owl of the autumn/winter was one far west at Bunken, Nordjylland from 31st.
Other March birds include the 1st winter Shag still at Hanstholm Harbour, Nordjylland, seven Great White Egrets, just one Red-breasted Goose, an adult Black Brant, a relocating drake Ferruginous Duck at Årslev Engsø, Østjylland during 7th-17th, nine Red-crested Pochards, two dubious Hooded Mergansers in Østjylland including one returning escaped female wearing a ring, three 1st winter Gyr Falcons, just four adult Mediterranian Gulls from 20th, just two Iceland Gulls including one in the Baltic Sea, two Yellow-legged Gulls, four adult Baltic Gulls including three at Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, three Tengmalm's Owls including two at Sjælland away from the breeding sites, a surprise ten Crested Larks feeding at the roundabout near Hirtshals Railway Station, Nordjylland on 20th and one Nutcracker.
