Billede information:
Fugleart: Østlig Hvepsevåge - (Pernis ptilorhynchus) - Crested Honey Buzzard
Fugleart (IOC): Østlig Hvepsevåge (Pernis ptilorhynchus) Crested Honey Buzzard - species factsheet
Stemme: Stemmer findes her (eksternt link).
Lokalitet: Eilat Northern Date Plantation, Israel
Dato: 31. december 2008
Billede info: This is probably last winters Crested Honey Buzzard returning for its second winter in Eilat, now in adult female plumage. Apart from what can be seen in the pictures we only noted that the bird felt unusually big for a European Honey Buzzard and had broad wings when it flew short distances between the palms. Is it possible to tell what species it is from the pictures? Is the throat pattern possible for a European Honey Buzzard? Any comments would be most appreciated!

After Jesper Segergren has picked some video stills from his film today we are now certain that this bird is a Crested Honey Buzzard. His pictures show the wingshape and the pattern of the underwing. You can find them on http://www.pbase.com/botb/israel_200809

Yes, undoubtedly a Crested H.B.
When seeing only the rightside, larger image, the proportions seem a bit odd, with too bulky wings, somewhat small eyes relative to the head and bill, and the distinctly darker line along the jaws ; all raise suspicion.
When viewing the upper left image, however, the id. falls into place, as the tail-projection is too long for P. Apivorus. Correspondingly the primary-projection is shorter than on P.A.
You could say that the secondaries are longer in Crested giving reason for the observers to report:"had broad wings when it flew...."

Hej

Bør artsnavnet ikke rettes til Tophvepsevåge, eftersom den virker relativt sikkert bestemt?

Navneudvalget har valgt at kalde den Østlig Hvepsevåge, så navnet er rigtig nok.
