Bird species: Black-headed Bunting - (Emberiza melanocephala)
Bird species (IOC): Black-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala) - species factsheet
Voice: Voices can be found here (external link).
Location: Halfeti, Sanliurfa, Turkey
Date: 27th May 2009

Hi,

This is actually female Black-headed Bunting (Emberiza melanocephala). Note bill size & shape, underpart colouration, pattern of greater coverts etc.

I agree that the bill looks very large for Cinereous bunting. I shall try to find more photoes to etasblish this bird, which is open to discussion.

Note also the tertial pattern. Pale fringes are narrow and 'straight', there is no 'bunting curve', which typical for most Emberiza, including cineracea.

For the same reason as Hannu mentioned - the tertial pattern was my initial impression as well. However, the angle is not the most favourable for a clinch. If that is the case, it would be another pro-feature for Black-headed.

Normally Cinereous and Black-headed Buntings can be seperated by the undertailcoverts that are bright yellow on Black-headed. This is is however a bit difficult to see on this BH Bunting, as the bird has its back to the sun - but it is still visible, though (if you look hard enough:-).
