Sorry for the poor quality (2500iso).
Probably a real 1st for WP as a Category-A.
The bird was found by David Monticelli close to me when we trying to refound the Cedar Waxwing. It was seen only by us on the High Fields but the bird was refound by PAC along the high part of Ribeira de Poço d'Agua more than 3,5km far... And later it was re located on Fojo (eared only).
Previously a strange call was eared in Caldeira one week ago and yesterday on Fojo... Most of birders eared it as a Flicker and others as Willet !?! Now we have a proof that it was a flicker !!!
If you clik on the name, you can see all the fotos of Northern Flicker on this forum, inc the one from Denmark in 1972 in cat A. So it must be a second.
Hi guys,
you are correct when stating that there is one previous record of northern flicker in Denmark in 1972. This record is however being currently re-circulated by the dannish raritee commitee and we have informal information from several members of that comittee that the record is dubious and is going to be removed from cat A. Hence the Corvo bird may represent the first record of this species in the WP in cat A (pending acceptance by the PRC).
Cheers
Hej Vincent
You may have been misinformed about the Danish Northern Flicker-record. The Danish record is placed in category A but is along with all other national firsts currently being recirculated in the Danish RC. This could of course lead to a D-categorization, but I would consider it doubtfull. The Danish record is well documented with a nice photo, but a woodpecker on continental Europe will of course be subject to constant scrutiny concerning its categorization.
All the best
