Various species of many hummingbird genera have a small light colored spot behind the eye. The dot is usually made up of small light colored feathers. Whether some species have dots of colored skin or not is unknown to me.
From an evolutionary viewpoint the spot is probably a primitive character that increase fitness given the great presence in the hummingbird family.
But what is the significance of the spot?

Men hvilken gavn giver prikken?
