Known locally as the Rufous Night-Heron. After visiting many wet areas I did not see any of these birds, but this one (with mother and father) was in the smallest pond in the middle of the biggest water village in Kota Kinabalu.
According to my field guide to the birds of Borne can Immature birds only be distinguished from young of Black-crowned Night-Heron in the hand. In this case the bird was together with its parents, I understand. Would it be possible to identify this bird if it had not been with its parents?
If memory serves me right I believe Nankeen Night Heron - even juveniles - have quite bright yellow eyes, whereas Black-crowned Herons normally have darker more reddish eyes.
If this is correct I would think the eye colour on this bird very much supports the ID as a Nankeen Night Heron.
