This species is sometimes confused with Montane White-eye. I suppose this is because to much attention is given to how narrow or wide the eye-ring is. The eye-ring is, to some extend, variable and not always a useful character.
The two species are not difficult to separate. Montane White-eye has bright yellow forehead, obviously black lores (Abyssinian more faded dark lores) and it is generally much more brightly coloured than the rather "faded" Abyssinicus race of Abyssinian White-eye
