The subspecies sokokensis is endemic to forests of the coastal regions of southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania.
Populations of other subspecies are scattered in southeastern Tanzania, northern Malawi and Mozambique.
The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest probably hold the worlds largest population of this species with an estimated 7500 pairs.
