Royal Penguin is not always white cheecked. Colour of the throat, face and superciliary region below the crest varies. Some individuals like this is gray cheeked and some dark.
Facial colour is independent of age. There is a higher frequency of dark-faced females than males. White faced are most common in colonies on the eastern and Dark common in colonies on the westerh coast. The overlap of facial colours of Royal and Macaroni E. c. chrysolophus Penguins is a problem distinguishing between the two species. |
