Seen at a hacienda with tall trees. Rather common all over the peninsula, calls out loud and frequently. This ssp. does not fit the name 'golden-fronted' very well (or not at all).. also the Dansih name (Bleg Spætte = 'Pale Woodpecker') seems to fit badly. A species of great variation in color patern. By the way: it was much more common that it's endemic smaller relative Yucatan Woodpecker... on our trip say 200:1. In our case also different habitats - Yucatan Woodpecker was seen only once in rather open low costal scrub near to Rio Lagartos. No Golden-fronted was seen there - all though the golden-fronted was seen in costal woods and scrub-like surroundings in other parts of the peninsula. |
