"False eyes"? On this picture it seems obvious that the Roadrunner also can present 'false eyes' like i.e. some owl's (look at Northern Pygmy-Owl).
The red area on the side of the head becomes 'shining red dragon eyes' surrounded by a feather pattern supporting the 'eye-look'.. when seen directly from behind. It might be a new observation since a brief look on the internet gives no hits using the relevant combination of words. It could be a new way of looking at the 'protective-tools' of this bird? – in support of this ‘speculation’: the red area is only visible when the bird is alert and raising the ‘top’ |
