Er der nogen med masser af tid i dette forår? Jeg har modtaget dette i min indbox i dag, så det er ikke mig der er sent på den ...

Subject: Volunteers wanted for El Salvador shorebird counts

SalvaNATURA and National Audubon Society are implementing shorebird conservation actions at El Salvador’s largest coastal IBA, known as Jaltepeque-Jiquilisco. This area was recently declared a biosphere reserve, and has extensive mangroves (40,000 hectares, or about 100,000 acres). It also has extensive mudflats and beaches, where American Oystercatchers, Wilson’s Plovers, Least Terns and Black Skimmers nest.

During 2008, weekly (weekend) shorebird censuses are scheduled, to determine the importance of several sites within this large area for migratory shorebirds. Also, the weekends of 2-3 February and 4-5 April are the national shorebird censuses organized by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

We are seeking shorebird enthusiasts to join our censuses and help with shorebird identification. Volunteers may also be interested in participating in environmental education or beach cleanup activities scheduled during the weeks, from January through July, and possibly later (pending funding). The beaches are used for nesting by four species of endangered sea turtles. Volunteers may also be able to join bird monitoring teams at several national parks during weekdays, or contribute to bird inventories at El Salvador’s 21 IBAs.

We cannot offer international travel reimbursements, but local transportation costs (vehicle, boat) for the shorebird counts in El Salvador will be covered. If anyone is interested in joining the El Salvador shorebird counts, please contact project coordinator, Esmeralda Martínez (emartinez@salvanatura.org).
