Dear all, We have been asked by a number of people about the return migration of our raptors with satellite transmitters. Here are the present situation: One ad. Red Kite (Rød Glente) which had wintered in northern Spain has already arrived in Germany some time ago. We have no news of another adult which had wintered in France and of two juv. which wintered in northern Spain. We are especially worried about the juveniles. One ad. Female Black Kite (Sort Glente) from Germany was in Andalucia (Spain) on 14 March at 37.7 N/ 5.1 W. An adult male from Germany was in central Morocco on 15 March. We receive at present no locations from the Honey Buzzards (Hvepsevåge) and according to the last year's experience suppose that they are not yet migrating. All Lesser Spotted Eagles (Lille Skrigeørn) from Germany are late again. One ad. male (ID 13287 Goritz) was still in Zambia on 9 March (13.1 S/ 30.8 E). Another male (ID 36021 Bärenmoor) was on 14 March on the border of Zambia and Tanzania. A third male (ID13282 Woltow) was even still in northern Zimbabwe on 11 March. Since the return migration takes about 7 1/2 weeks many of the adult Lesser Spotted Eagles will once again arrive too late in the breeding area to lay eggs. This is a phenomenon which we have observed for a number of years already and we wonder if anybody has an idea why these birds leave too late from their wintering grounds to be able to breed. The same may be true for a Greater Spotted Eagle (Stor Skrigeørn) from Poland which was still in central Sudan (16 N/ 31 W) on 12 March. Finally a Short-toed Eagle (Slangeørn) from France is also on its way home. On 15 March it was located in Andalucia in Spain. This gives hope that we for the first time finally will be able to track a Short-toed Eagle on its spring migration.
