Normally the tail projects a bit beyond the tips of the primaries, but if the bird has with very little subcutanious fat, it can show neglible or no tailprojection.
This very young juvenile (in fact still with pullus-downs on the head ) has obviously not grown its retrices fully, thus the marked primary-projection.

Daniel, the Purple Sandpiper breeds every year at the Faeroe Island but only i small numbers, a carefull estimate would be less than 10 breeding pairs, as fare as i know it is only confirmed to breed at the iles Vágar and Sandoy.
