This majestic bird is usually described as the tallest flying bird on Earth and can reach an impressive height of over 150 cm. In Nepal there are two different names for this species; one is "sarus" and the other is the onomatopoetic "klong korong". The species is globally threatened with an estimated population at 20,000. Several pairs breed around Lumbini and in Kapilvastu district in southern Nepal.
